Madison, Wisconsin

Madison is a city in the United States, the capital of the state of Wisconsin. The town is located on the lakes of Mendota and Monona, about 125 miles west of Milwaukee. The city itself has 228,800 residents (2007), but forms a larger metropolitan area with 555,600 residents (2007).

Madison is a trading center, and it is manufacturing machines, electrical equipment, tools and more. The city is the headquarters of the University of Wisconsin, founded in 1848, and also has a technical college as well as large libraries.

The city, named after the fourth president of the United States, James Madison, grew after the site was designated as the capital of Wisconsin territory in 1836.
