Salem, Oregon
Salem, the capital of the state of Oregon, USA, is located on the Willamette River, 80 km southwest of Portland. The city has 169,798 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).
Indigenous peoples, including the Kalapuya tribe, lived in the area for thousands of years with the Willamette Valley as their main area. The first whites who settled here in 1812 were fur hunters from Astoria, Oregon. Methodist priest Jason Lee led a group that came to the area in 1840 and established the forerunner to Salem – Wheatland – in 1842.
Salem is a trading center with some industry, especially in food processing. Willamette University is located in Salem, which became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851, and the state capital when Oregon became a state in the United States in 1859. Every year in August, a major State Fair is held in the city.
Salem is a common city name in the United States, with cities in New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio and Missouri.
Portland, Oregon
Portland is the largest city in the state of Oregon in the United States and is located on the Willamette River near its outlet on the Columbia River, 160 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The city has 647,805 residents, and is the core of a larger metropolitan area with 2,453,168 residents also extending into Washington (U.S. Census, 2017).

Portland is Oregon’s largest city and economic center, and an important port and trade city with shipyards, food and groceries, textiles, chemical, wood and wood processing industries.
Education and culture
The city is the seat of Lewis and Clark College, founded 1867, University of Portland, founded 1901, Portland State University, founded 1946, Portland Community College, founded 1961 and several other colleges. Portland has long been known as the “City of Roses” and has its annual Rose Festival in June.
