Lakehurst, New Jersey

Lakehurst, small town in the United States, New Jersey, 80 miles west of New York City; 2520 in. (2000). Was transatlantic landing place for steerable airships. In 1923, the first American airship, Shenandoah, relieved it, and in 1929 Graf Zeppelin made his 21-day flight around the world from there and back. The Zeppelin Hindenburg crash there on May 6, 1937. The airship was the most modern, with the passengers inboard instead of the gondola. Due to boycott of helium sales to Germany, flammable hydrogen was used. The accident meant the end for commercial use of the airships. 35 of 97 passengers and one of the ground crew died. Now military air station. Hangar One (1921) is a national memorial (1968) to commemorate the aircraft carrier era.

Jersey City, New Jersey

Jersey City is a city northeast of the state of New Jersey in the United States, with 270,753 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). It is located on the Bergen Neck Peninsula on the Hudson River, opposite Manhattan, to which the city is connected by tunnels and ferry. The city forms part of New York 's port area.

Jersey City is an important transportation terminal, the end point for a number of rail lines and the distribution and production center for New York Port and New Jersey.

Business and culture

The industry is significant with oil and sugar refineries, steel mills, mechanical and chemical industries and production of electrical products, cosmetics and clothing. The cleanup of the Newport and Exchange Place ports has made these parts of Jersey City, nicknamed " Wall Street West," one of the largest banking and financial centers in the United States.

There are several universities and colleges. Liberty State Park opened in 1976 and the Jersey City Museum in 2001.

History

The area was inhabited by the Lenape, a term for several strains of indigenous (later called Delaware -People) when Henry Hudson landed in 1609. Dutch hunters settled in Paulus Hook in 1618. The British gained control of the area in 1674. Under the American Revolution in 1779 Henry Lee stormed the city and expelled the British.

Rail lines were completed in the 1830s and the Morris Canal extended to New Jersey in 1836. Paul Hook was renamed Jersey City in 1838. In 1870, Hudson City and Bergen City were incorporated in Jersey City.

Under the Hudson River between Jersey City and Lower Manhattan are the Hudson and Manhattan Railways tunnels. They opened in 1908. The Holland tunnel for motor vehicles under the river opened in 1927.

Before World War II came many German, Irish and Italian immigrants. In the post-World War II era, many whites have moved out of Jersey City and, among other things, Puerto Ricans have moved in.

Hoboken, New Jersey

Hoboken, a city in the United States, New Jersey, on the west bank of the Hudson, just opposite Manhattan; 40,500 inb (2007), included in the New York region. Versatile industry and major port areas, managed as part of the Port of New York. Founded by the Dutch 1630; city ​​status in 1855. Important military shipping port during the First World War. Atlantic City, New Jersey

Atlantic City is a city in the state of New Jersey in the United States with 38,429 residents (U.S. Census 2017). It is located on the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Philadelphia and south of New York.

The city is known for its casinos and is therefore often called the Las Vegas East Coast. With its beaches, promenades and subtropical climate, it is also one of the most important resorts and resorts in the United States.

History and culture

Atlantic City was founded in 1854 and gained city status in 1870. The first boardwalk was built in 1870 and an increasing number of tourists came by train, eventually also by bus, car and plane, to the city's ever-increasing hotels. Atlantic City had a prime time in the 1920s and 1930s. The post-war period was characterized by economic decline, crime and declining visits. Legalization of gaming casinos in 1978 and boxing events became turning points that drew more tourists to the city.

Culture

Atlantic City is known for the annual Miss America annual honors from 1921 to 2005 and the Easter Parade. Boardwalk Hall organizes conferences, the Boardwalk Art Show art festival, concerts and sports events.

Population

Atlantic City had about 40,500 residents in 2000 and then a reduced population to 39,558 in 2010 and 38,429 in 2017.

Trenton, New Jersey

Trenton is the state capital of New Jersey, USA. The city is located on the Delaware River, 90 km southwest of New York, and has 84,964 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

In the 1800s and early 1900s, Trenton was a major industrial and commercial center, and the slogan "Trenton Makes, The World Takes" (installed 1935) from the Lower Trenton Bridge, linking Pennsylvania and New Jersey, still shines. Another landmark is a 47 meter high monument erected in memory of George Washington's victory at the Battle of Trenton in 1776.

The city was founded by Quakers in 1679 as The Falls, and has been the state capital since 1790.

Princeton, New Jersey

Princeton is a city in the United States in the state of New Jersey, by the river Millstone, 18 km northeast of Trenton. The city has 31,822 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). Publishing and the graphic industry are important industries, as the city is an educational and research center.

The town was founded by Quakers in 1696 under the name Stony Brook. In 1724, it was renamed Princeton and grew up around one of America's most prestigious universities, Princeton University, founded in 1746.

Princeton gained city status in 1813. The city also has the Institute for Advanced Study (1930) where Albert Einstein spent his last active years.
