St. Paul, Minnesota
St. Paul is the capital of the state of Minnesota, USA, and is located at the mouth of the Minnesota River in the Mississippi River. The city has 306,621 residents, and together with Minneapolis forms just west of the interconnected Minneapolis-St. Paul – Bloomington (Twin Cities) with 3,600,618 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).
Business and culture
St. Paul is an important transport and trade center with a multifaceted industry, including the production of cars, communications equipment, chemical products, consumables and foodstuffs. The city is the seat of the Methodist Hamline University, founded in 1854, and of the State University’s agricultural department. The dominant Minnesota State Capitol (1905), which houses the congress and state assemblies, is a copy of the Washington. St. Paul is also Catholic archbishopric.
History
St. Paul was created in 1838 as Pig’s Eye, renamed Saint Paul in 1841. The city became the capital of the Minnesota Territory in 1849, the merchant capital in 1854, and the state capital in 1858, when Minnesota became the state. While the twin city of Minneapolis is dominated by Scandinavians, St. Paul has a larger proportion of Irish and Eastern and Southern Europeans, as well as African Americans. St. Paul was an important trading and shipping place for livestock in the 19th century, with large slaughterhouses, centered in South St. Paul, which from 1877 gained its own city status.
Alexandria, Minnesota
City of Minnesota, USA, approx. 200 km northwest of Minneapolis. Extensive tourism related to all the lakes in the area. Every year, the Vikingland Band Festival – one of America’s biggest music parades. In 1898, the so-called Kensington stone was found outside Alexandria. Inscriptions suggested that Vikings should have visited the area in the 1400s, but the rune stone has later turned out to be a fake.
