Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan

Sault Sainte Marie is a city in the state of Michigan in the United States with 14 144 residents (U.S. Census, 2010), located on the south side of the St. Mary's River, connecting Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Duct and lock systems. Bridge connection to the twin city of Sault Sainte Marie in Ontario, Canada.

A mission station was established here in 1669 by French Jesuits. In 1783, the North West Company founded a fur merchant station. City status 1887. Locks built as early as the 19th century, later modernized and now an important part of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Important for timber and ore transportation from the Lake Superior area, especially northern Minnesota with the city of Duluth.

Lansing, Michigan

Lansing is the capital of the state of Michigan in the United States, with 118,427 residents (U.S. Census, 2018), which together with East Lansing forms a larger metropolitan area called Mid-Michigan and has about 470,000 residents. The city is where the Red Cedar River flows into the Grand River 137 miles northwest of Detroit. Lansing is the only state capital in the United States that is not also the headquarters of a county. The name is after Lansing in the state of New York, home to one of the city's first residents.

Population

61.2 percent of residents are white and 23.7 percent are African-African-American (2010). Lansing reached its largest population with 131 546 residents in 1970.

Business

As Michigan's capital, most are employed within the board and administration. Many also work in education, insurance (Lansing is the headquarters of four major insurance companies), banking, healthcare and automotive (General Motors). Decline in car production has triggered a greater focus on information technology and biotechnology.

Education and culture

There are several universities and departments of universities. The largest is Michigan State University, founded in 1855, in East Lansing. Thomas M. Cooley Law School is America's largest law school. Other universities have departments in the city and there are several colleges, including Lansing Community College, founded in 1957.

Among galleries and museums are the Lansing Art Gallery, the RE Olds Transportation Museum and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The Wharton Center for the Performing Arts opened in 1982 and the renovation and expansion of the center was completed in 2009. The city has several theaters.

Old Town Oktoberfest is held annually and there are several food markets in the summer; Lansing City Market is run all year. Potter Park Zoo is located on the Red Cedar River.

History

The later Lansing was a wilderness with dense forest when the state capital was moved there from Detroit in 1847. The year after, the place changed its name from Michigan to Lansing. Three villages grew up along the Grand River, the latter especially after a bridge was built across the Grand River and a temporary state building was erected. In 1859, Lansing had nearly 3,000 residents. A new State Capitol was inaugurated in 1879 in a downtown park. Lansing gained rail links in the 1870s and the city grew industrially especially after the establishment of Olds Motor Vehicle Company (1897) and REO Motor Car Company in 1905.

Between 1900 and 1910 the population almost doubled. East Lansing was incorporated into the city in 1907. The city grew in the decades that followed with large production of cars, auto parts and other industries. Car production has been less important in Lansing in recent decades than before, but in 2001 General Motors opened a new factory, the Lansing Grand River Assembly. Renovation of a number of downtown buildings was initiated in the 2010s.

Jackson, Michigan

In Michigan, at the Grand River, 117 miles west of Detroit; 35,200 in. (2003). Forms a larger metropolitan area with a population of 158,400 (2000). Former steel and automotive industry; now production of car and airplane parts. Space Center. The Republican Party held its first national assembly here, July 6, 1854. City status 1857.

Greenfield Village, Michigan

Greenfield Village is a collection of 100 historic buildings in the Dearborn car city of Michigan, USA, established by Henry Ford in 1933.

In Greenfield Village are the childhood homes of many famous Americans: the Wilbur and Orville Wright brothers, William Holmes McGuffey, Stephen Foster ; Thomas Edison 's workshop and Abraham Lincoln 's law office. Next to it is the Henry Ford Museum with a collection of American documents and objects.

Dearborn, Michigan

Dearborn, a city in USA, Michigan, 15 km west of downtown Detroit, at River Rouge; 89,200 inbound (2007). Industrial Suburb; headquarters of Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford 's birthplace. The automotive industry began with the construction of the large River Rouge plant in 1917. During World War II, Ford built a large bomber plant, taken over by Kaiser-Frazer in 1946 and converted into automotive production. University Branch (1959). Attractions include Greenfield Village, a remake of an old American small town, and the Henry Ford Museum. For many years, Henry Ford published The Dearborn Independent newspaper, asserting his intolerant attitude towards immigrants and his anti-Semitic views.

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Ann Arbor, city of Michigan, USA. Located approx. 50 km west of Detroit. University city with a state university from 1817. The university's Institute for Science and Technology, in collaboration with private companies, has created a research center for aerospace, nuclear physics and metallurgy. The city is also a leading medical center. Manufacture of precision instruments, ball bearings and photographic equipment.
