Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is a port city in the United States in the state of Georgia, at the Savannah River, 25 km from the mouth. The city has 146,444 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). Savannah has been, and has been, an important industrial center since it was founded as Georgia's first city in 1733. First, the production and export of silk and indigo was important; since cotton, sugar, pulp, paper and fertilizers. In the center lies the Old Town, a protected historical area with significant tourism.

Savannah was the capital of the province of Georgia until 1786. The city was the target of General William Sherman's famous March to the Sea from Atlanta during the American Civil War in the fall of 1864.

Columbus, Georgia

Business and culture

Columbus is one of the most important centers of the cotton industry in the Southern States. The industry also includes oil refineries, foundries, railway workshops and machine factories. Large military facilities are located south of the city (Fort Benning).

Columbus State University dates from 1958. The 1962 Southern Civil War Museum, the National Civil War Museum at Port Columbus from 1962, is located in Columbus. The 1871 Springer Opera House was restored in 1965, the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts opened in 2002 and the National Museum and Soldier Center in Fort Benning in 2009.

History

The city was founded in 1828. It was located in the territory of the Creek people who were relocated in 1836. Cotton from plantations was shipped from Columbus via New Orleans to the United Kingdom. Columbus was an important support point for the Southern Confederation during the American Civil War. Columbus was conquered by Union troops in 1865, a week after the surrender of Southern States General Robert E. Lee, due to poor communications.

Extensive renewal and revitalization has been going on in Columbus since the second half of the 1990s.

The city is named after Kristoffer Columbus, and shares names with Columbus, Ohio.

The 15th Wisconsin Regiment, also known as the "Norwegian Regiment" with, among other things, "Valdre's Company" under Colonel Hans Christian Heg of Lier, came under war and suffered heavy casualties. Colonel Heg was among the fallen. The southern state army had 18,000 killed and wounded, the Union army 16,000.

The place is located 20 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and has 3,144 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).
