History

The first urban settlement was established in 1823. In 1849, the area gained village status, urban status in 1853. But it was not until the discovery of phosphate in the Bone Valley around 1885 that urban development accelerated. In 1870, Tampa had less than 1,000 residents, in 1900 the population was approximately 16,000. In the record year 1929 more than 500 million were produced.

Tampa grew strongly during and after World War II when the current MacDill Air Force Base with over 12,000 employees was established. In the post-war period, growth continued, especially in tourism and trade. The city had about 108,000 residents in 1940, by 1970 it had grown to about 278,000.

Tallahassee, Florida

Tallahassee is a city and capital of the state of Florida in the United States. The city has 193,551 residents (U.S. Census, 2018) and forms a larger region (metropolitan area) with about 385,000 residents spread over the counties of Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon and Wakulla.

Tallahassee is the largest city in Florida Big Bend and is located in the Florida Panhandle region in the northwest of the state and 260 miles west of Jacksonville. The city is set on a slightly hilly terrain up to 61 feet above the ocean, and with the Florida State Capitol building on one of the highest hilltops. The town has two lakes, Lake Jackson and Lake Lafayette. The climate is humid subtropical.

The name is an old muskogee word that is often translated with ‘old town’ or ‘old fields’.

Population

Since 1840 the population has been steadily increasing. 56.9 percent of residents are white, 34.8 percent are African-American, 6.9 percent are Hispanic, 4.4 percent are Asian, and 0.2 percent are North American Indigenous.

Many museums include the Tallahassee Museum of History & Science on the outskirts of the city and the Tallahassee Automobile & Collectibles Museum. Other museums include the Museum of Fine Arts, the Tallahassee Museum, the Museum of Florida History, the Goodward Museum & Gardens and the Tallahassee Automobile Museum.

Railroad Square Art Park is a main center for entertainment, arts and other cultural activities.

Annual festivals include First Friday Festivals in Railroad Square on the first Friday of each month, Springtime Tallahassee in the spring, Downtown Getdown in the fall, Greek Food Festival in October, Tallahassee Wine and Food Festival two days in November and Winter Festival in November / December.

History

Native American peoples lived in the area for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Around the year 1200, people in the Mississippi culture built earthen walls that still exist near Lake Jackson. Hernando de Soto conquered the Appalachee town of Anhaica in the winter of 1538-1539.

When Florida became an American territory in 1821, it had two capitals, St. Augustine and Pensacola. General Andrew Jackson burned down the village of Tallahassee in 1818 and banished its residents. In 1824, Tallahassee became the capital of Florida territory when a legislative assembly met there in a local timber building.

A progressively larger border development was emerging in the Lafayette Land Grant area (Tallahassee and surrounding area) provided by the United States Congress in 1845 when Florida became a U.S. state. A stone capitol building was built, which is still preserved in front of the Florida State Capitol.

During the American Civil War, Tallahassee was the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi River. The small Battle of Natural Bridge was fought south of the city on March 6, 1865, a month before the war was over. The end of slavery made the cotton and tobacco trade less profitable, and many former plantations were bought by wealthy people from the northern states.

In the second part of the 19th century, Tallahassee became an administration, university and college town, with the addition of cattle, timber and tourism, and was a small town until World War II. In the 1950s, there were riots in the city.

In 1977, the new 22-story Florida State Capitol Building was erected as the United States’ third tallest building of its kind. In 2015, Tallahassee was hit by a tornado and in 2016 and 2018 by hurricanes.
