History and culture

An American fort was built here in 1797, and the city was founded in 1819 by later President Andrew Jackson. Memphis was an important center for the cotton and lumber trade in the 19th century, and the city still has a cotton carnival in May.

Memphis has played a significant role in the development of American popular music, and is known as the home of the blues (Beale Street) and the hometown of a number of well-known rock and roll artists, including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. Graceland, Elvis Presley's home, is located just outside the city, and is a major and important tourist destination.

Civil Rights Defender and Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King jr. was murdered in Memphis in 1968. The Lorraine Motel, where the murder happened, is today a memorial.

The town was founded in 1815, and was named Ross' Landing until 1838. It was located on the border between the corn and cotton regions, and was an important transport hub for the Southern states during the American Civil War. The city was conquered by the Union troops under General Ulysses Grant 23-25. November 1863. Civil War battlefields are preserved in Chattanooga and Chickamauga National Military Park. Just outside the city are Lookout Mountain (729 masl) and Missionary Ridge, which are the most famous places of battle.
