Lincoln, Nebraska

Lincoln is the second largest city and state capital in Nebraska, USA, and is located 80 miles southwest of the state's largest city, Omaha. Lincoln has 284,736 residents, forming a larger metropolitan area with 331,519 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Business and culture

The city is the communications and trading center for a large agricultural area and has mills, grain silos, slaughterhouses and cement factories, oil refineries and pharmaceutical and other industries. Finance, insurance, education, a growing high-tech sector, and health services employ many.

Lincoln is the seat of the University of Nebraska, founded in 1869, and of Nebraska Wesleyan University, founded in 1887.

There are several museums and art galleries. Haymarket Farmers' Market takes place annually from May to October in the city's Historic Haymarket district.

History

Before the arrival of European settlers, several indigenous groups hunted, for example, bison on the prairie in the area. The city was founded as Lancaster in 1856 before being named after Abraham Lincoln in 1867. In the 1890s, the city was the hub for 19 rail lines. In the early 1900s, the political life of the city was dominated by William Jennings Bryan, who lived here in the years 1887-1921. Here he published his newspaper, The Commoner.

The 110-foot tall Nebraska State Capitol, the second tallest building for legislative assemblies in the United States, was completed in 1932. After 1970, the city has had a large immigration of refugees from Africa (Sudan) and Asia (Vietnam, Iraq, Myanmar).
