Wichita is the largest city in the state of Kansas in the United States with
389,255 residents (U.S. Census, 2018) and forms a larger metropolitan area with
approximately 645,000 residents. The city is located on the Arkansas River in
south central Kansas.
The city is an industrial and commercial center, including factories for the
production of aircraft and the sale of cattle, and has been named after the
indigenous group wichita.
The city has had population growth since 1870. Nearly 75.9 percent are white
and 11.2 percent are African-American (2019).
Wichita's main industry is the production of aircraft and aircraft parts,
which is why Wichita is called "The Air Capital of the World". Aircraft
manufacturers include Beechcraft, Cessna, Airbus, Bombardier and Boeing (until
2013). Spirit AeroSystems has a factory for the production of floating parts in
Wichita. The city has headquarters for the production of meat and other
nutritional products. Chemicals, refined petroleum products and biodiesel are
also produced. The health sector is Wichita's second largest employer. There are
five hospitals in the city.
Wichita is considered Kansas cultural center. Here are a number of museums,
including the Wichita Art Museum, the Edwin A. Ulrich
Museum of Art and the Science Museum of Exploration Place. The
Old Cowtown Museum has historical collections. Music Theater Wichita and Wichita
Grand Opera are nationally known.
There are a number of annual festivals. The Wichita River Festival takes
place in May / June and in February the Wichita Public Library is hosting a
short film festival nominated for the Academy Award (Oscar). The Wichita Flight
Festival and the McConnell Air Base Open House and Airshow organize flight shows
and exhibitions.
Just east of the city center is Oldtown, Wichita's entertainment district
with nightclubs and restaurants. Along the Arkansas River is Botanica, The
Wichita Gardens with a variety of theme gardens. The city has several parks and
other recreational areas. The Sedgwick County Zoo is located northwest of
Wichita.
Wichita has three universities. Wichita State University is the
largest. There are also departments of out-of-town universities and a number of
colleges.
Archaeological finds show the settlement of indigenous people in the Wichita
area already around 3000 BCE. Wichita was founded in 1868 as a trading station
on the Chisholm Trail cattle ranch and for the surrounding agricultural
areas. Wichita was born in 1870 and in the early years was an intermediate
station for cattle operations to the north from Texas to railways in Kansas. In
1872, Wichita gained rail link and increased importance in cattle trading. Prior
to 1875, free cattle farming had been hindered by fences built by farmers
and grain became an important commodity product. On the other side of the
Arkansas River, the small town of Delano, characterized by lawless conditions,
grew. Delano was annexed by Wichita in 1880.
In 1914–1915, natural gas and crude oil were discovered outside Wichita,
leading to the construction of refineries and economic boom times. Money was
invested, among other things, in the construction of aircraft, and in 1934
Boeing became the city's largest workplace, including the production of military
aircraft for decades. The Pizza Hut restaurant chain was founded in Wichita in
1958.
