Des Moines, Iowa

Des Moines is the capital and largest city in the state of Iowa in the United States. The town is located right in the middle of the state by the Des Moines River, which the town is named after. Des Moines has 217,521 residents, and is the core of a larger city region with 645,911 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Des Moines is an important transport hub and regional center for banking and insurance, wholesale and graphic business. The city is the seat of Drake University, founded in 1881, and the College of Medicine, College of Osteopathic Medicine. The Iowa Commission for the Blind has the largest collection of blind literature in the country. The annual Iowa State Fair is among the largest in the world. The city has 45 km of climate-controlled skyways – built-in pedestrian bridges – that tie the city center together.

Des Moines was founded in 1851 at Fort Des Moines from 1843, gained city status in 1857 and became the state capital from 1858.

Decorah, Iowa

City of Iowa, USA. Located on the Upper Iowa River, 96 km northeast of Waterloo. Founded by Norwegian settlers in 1849, city 1871; center for Norwegian culture in the United States, seat of Luther College with a significant Norwegian-American museum, “Vesterheim”, for the Norwegian Society and for the viable Norwegian association Symra (founded 1907); here was published Decorah-Posten. Named after the Indian chief Waukon Decorah of the Winnebago tribe. The city holds an annual celebration, Nordic party, to celebrate and take care of its Scandinavian roots.
