Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Montgomery, Alabama

According to Countryaah.com, Montgomery is a city in the United States and the capital of the state of Alabama. It is located on the Alabama River, which is navigable here. The city has 199,518 residents (U.S. Census, 2017), and forms the center of a larger urban region with 374,536 residents (U.S. Census, 2010).

Montgomery is a trade center with cotton, cattle and timber markets, besides the production of artificial fertilizers and furniture. The State University was founded in 1887, and there are large military airbases outside the city.

History

Montgomery was founded in 1819, was the state capital of 1847, and became the first state confederation of the Southern Confederation in 1861. The city played a significant role during the civil rights struggles of the 1950s-1960s. It was here that the almost one-year bus boycott started in 1955, and where Martin Luther King Jr. organized one of the most effective protest marches in 1965.
