Mobile, Alabama

Mobile, a U.S. city, is located in the state of Alabama at the mouth of the Mobile River in the Gulf of Mexico (in the Gulf of Mexico). The city has about 195,000 residents (2013) and is the center of a larger metropolitan area with approx. 605,000 residents (2013). Important port and industrial town with paper, aluminum, chemical, iron and steel industries, shipyards. Large air station, base for United States Air Force. Catholic Diocese.

Founded in 1711, Mobile was the capital of French Louisiana until 1720. On August 5, 1864, during the Civil War, there was an important naval battle at Mobile, won by Federal Admiral David G. Farragut.

Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham is the largest city in the state of Alabama in the southern United States, with 210,710 residents. The city forms the core of a larger metropolitan area with 1,149,807 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). Of the population, 72 percent are considered African American, 22.6 percent white, and 3.4 percent Hispanic (U.S. Census, 2017).

Business

The city has been – and still is – an important center for the iron and steel industry in the Southern States (U.S. Steel), based on local deposits of coal, iron ore, limestone and dolomite. The industry has gradually become more versatile, with the production of automotive and floating parts, chemical substances, cement and textiles. Several major banks are headquartered in Birmingham, which is also the seat of several higher education institutions, including state universities.

History

The city, which is named after Birmingham, England, was founded in 1871 and had only about 38,000 residents in 1900, but grew explosively over the next ten years, and had about 133,000 residents in 1910. Growth continued until 1960 (about 341,000 residents). Since then, the population has declined due to major restructuring of the heavy industry. The city had about 266,000 residents in 1990.

In the 1960s, Birmingham was the site of serious clashes between whites and blacks. In 1979, the city became the first major city in Alabama to receive black mayor. The industry has created major air pollution problems, in 1971 several companies were shut down by the authorities during an acute pollution crisis. The problems have subsided with the demolition of part of the heavy industry.
